Best Places to Visit in India: March to May A seasonal guide for international travellers — by KeyTerns, Chennai
India in spring is a well-kept secret. While most international visitors plan their India trips around the October to February peak season, March to May offers something equally compelling — and far less crowded. Wildlife sightings are at their most reliable, heritage sites are still accessible before the northern heat peaks, and South India remains comfortable through May. This guide covers each of our core focus areas for international travellers and what to expect if you're visiting between March and May.
March to May is one of the finest seasons for wildlife across South India. As vegetation thins and water sources concentrate, animals are easier to spot than during the lush monsoon months — and lodge occupancy is lower than the October to February peak.
Kerala — Gavi Gavi sits deep inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve — one of Kerala's most pristine and least visited wilderness areas. Access is deliberately limited, keeping the experience genuinely wild. The combination of trekking, jeep safari, and boating through cardamom forest regularly yields elephants, gaur, lion-tailed macaques, and over 260 bird species. April and May are ideal — dry weather, excellent visibility.
Karnataka — Kabini, Nagarhole and Bandipur The Kabini backwaters in April and May are among the finest wildlife photography settings in Asia. As water recedes, elephant herds of 50–100 animals gather at the river's edge at dawn — a spectacle that rivals East Africa for scale. Bandipur and Nagarhole form a contiguous corridor with Mudumalai across the state border, making a combined circuit through all three reserves possible in 5–7 days.
Tamil Nadu — Mudumalai and Masinagudi Mudumalai sits at the junction of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala — one of India's most biodiverse national parks. Masinagudi at the Nilgiri foothills is particularly well regarded for nocturnal wildlife — leopards, civets, and porcupines are regularly spotted on evening drives. March and April are excellent; May is warm but still rewarding.
Central India — Tiger Country March to May is prime season for tiger sightings in Madhya Pradesh. Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, and Panna are all open through May, and the dry conditions concentrate wildlife around waterholes — dramatically increasing tiger encounter probability. This is the best season for serious wildlife photographers targeting Bengal tigers.
Best months: April and May for South India. March to May for Central India. Minimum recommended duration: 5–7 days
March is the final month of the winter migration season across India, making it a special window for international birders. Species that have spent the winter in Tamil Nadu and Kerala — waders, raptors, and forest birds from Central Asia and the Himalayas — are still present through mid-March before heading north. From April onwards, resident species and endemics take centre stage.
South India Birding — Western Ghats The Western Ghats running through Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu host 28 endemic bird species found nowhere else on earth. Our South India birding circuits cover Thattekad Bird Sanctuary in Kerala — Asia's richest bird count per square kilometre — alongside the high-altitude sholas of Munnar, the forests of Mudumalai, and the coastal wetlands of Tamil Nadu.
North India Birding — Bharatpur and Rajasthan Keoladeo Ghana National Park in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, is one of the world's finest birding destinations. March sees the last of the winter waterfowl before the Siberian migrants depart. Combine Bharatpur with Ranthambore for a birding and wildlife safari combination in one Rajasthan circuit.
Northeast India — Kaziranga and Assam March is an excellent month for birding in Assam before the pre-monsoon heat arrives. Kaziranga — famous for the one-horned rhinoceros — is equally outstanding for birds, with over 480 species recorded including the Bengal Florican and Greater Adjutant Stork.
Best month for birding: March — winter migrants still present alongside residents April and May: endemics, residents, and breeding plumage on display Minimum recommended duration: 6–8 days
Heritage and Culture — Rajasthan
Rajasthan in March and early April is at its most comfortable for international visitors — temperatures sit between 25–32°C, the light is golden in the late afternoons, and the forts and palaces are uncrowded compared to the winter peak. By May, temperatures in Jaipur and Jodhpur can reach 40°C — manageable with early morning and evening sightseeing, but worth noting when planning.
A Rajasthan heritage circuit typically covers Jaipur's walled city and Amber Fort, the blue city of Jodhpur and Mehrangarh, and the lake palaces of Udaipur. For travellers with more time, Pushkar — one of India's most sacred and atmospheric pilgrimage towns — adds a compelling cultural dimension. Ranthambore Tiger Reserve sits between Jaipur and Agra, making a wildlife add-on seamless.
March is the month of Holi — India's festival of colour — celebrated with particular joy in Rajasthan's villages and towns. If your travel dates align, it's one of the most memorable cultural experiences India offers.
Best months: March and April Avoid: May if heat-sensitive — plan early morning sightseeing if travelling in May Minimum recommended duration: 5–7 days
4. Heritage and Culture — Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur)
The Golden Triangle remains India's most complete introduction for first-time international visitors — combining Mughal architecture, Rajput heritage, and the sheer scale of Delhi in one connected circuit. March and April are among the best months to do it — comfortably warm without the intense heat of June onwards.
The Taj Mahal at Agra is best experienced at dawn in March and April — soft light, relatively few visitors, and temperatures that make the walk from the gate to the monument genuinely pleasant. Delhi's Red Fort, Qutub Minar, and Humayun's Tomb are best done in the early morning hours when the light is good and the heat manageable.
For international travellers wanting to combine North and South India in one trip, the Golden Triangle pairs naturally with a South India wildlife or birding circuit — fly Delhi to Chennai after Jaipur and continue south.
Best months: March and April May is possible with early morning scheduling — temperatures can reach 40°C in Delhi and Agra Minimum recommended duration: 5–7 days standalone, 12–14 days combined with South India
5. Heritage and Culture — Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu's temple circuit is one of India's most underrated heritage experiences for international visitors — and one of the most rewarding. The Dravidian temples of the deep south — Madurai's Meenakshi Amman, Thanjavur's Brihadeeswarar, Chidambaram's Nataraja, and Rameswaram on the island tip of India — are architecturally and culturally unlike anything in North India.
March to May is a perfectly manageable season for Tamil Nadu heritage travel. Temperatures range from 30–36°C on the plains, with sea breezes along the coast keeping conditions comfortable. The hill stations of Ooty, Coonoor, and Kodaikanal provide a natural midway break for travellers combining temple circuits with cooler elevations.
Tamil Nadu also offers a combination unavailable anywhere else — ancient living temples, South Indian classical music and dance, UNESCO-listed shore temples at Mahabalipuram (just 60km from Chennai), and some of India's finest birding and wildlife within a 5-hour drive. A well-designed Tamil Nadu itinerary covers all of these in 7–8 days.
Best months: March to May — comfortable with early morning temple visits Minimum recommended duration: 6–8 days
6. Heritage and Culture — Hampi
Hampi is one of India's most extraordinary archaeological sites — the ruins of Vijayanagara, once one of the largest cities in the medieval world, spread across a surreal boulder-strewn landscape on the banks of the Tungabhadra river in Karnataka. For international travellers who have done the standard North India circuit, Hampi is the discovery that reframes their understanding of Indian history.
March is the best month to visit — temperatures are warm but manageable at 28–32°C, the light on the ancient stone is spectacular in the early morning, and the site remains relatively uncrowded. April is still pleasant; May temperatures reach 38–40°C making it the least comfortable month, though early morning visits remain worthwhile.
Hampi combines naturally with a Goa beach extension or a Karnataka wildlife circuit through Kabini and Nagarhole — both within 5–6 hours by road or a short flight. A combined Hampi and Karnataka wildlife itinerary is one of our most interesting offerings for travellers who want heritage and nature in equal measure.
Best month: March April is manageable — plan around early mornings Avoid May if heat-sensitive Minimum recommended duration: 3–4 days standalone, 7–10 days combined with Karnataka wildlife
7. Heritage and Culture — Varanasi
Varanasi is unlike anywhere else in India — or the world. One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth, it sits on the western bank of the Ganga and has been a centre of Hindu pilgrimage, Sanskrit learning, and classical music for over 3,000 years. For international travellers, it is consistently among the most powerful and affecting experiences India offers.
March and April are the finest months to visit. The Ganga ghats at dawn in March — bathed in soft light, alive with ritual, and free of the summer humidity — are among the most atmospheric scenes in Asia. The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat at dusk is unmissable at any time of year, but the cooler evenings of March make the experience more comfortable.
March also brings Holi to Varanasi — celebrated here with particular intensity, especially in the lanes of the old city and on the ghats. If your dates align with Holi, Varanasi is the finest place in India to experience it.
May temperatures in Varanasi reach 42–45°C — the city is still functional and the ghats still come alive at dawn and dusk, but the midday hours are genuinely uncomfortable. We recommend March and April for Varanasi, and combining it with Khajuraho's medieval temples and the tiger reserves of Madhya Pradesh for a Central India circuit.
Best months: March and April Avoid: May unless heat-resilient Minimum recommended duration: 2–3 days standalone, 7–10 days combined with Khajuraho and Madhya Pradesh wildlife
