  • In Japan, almost everyone speaks only in Japanese. Only some may speak English. If you have to converse or understand anything about history, you need a guide. However, for visiting places, language is not a problem. Everywhere sign boards, announcements  and routes are in english. English Digital route maps are there in trains

  • Forex: Japan Yen exchange rate at money exchanges in India is around 0.6 but forex cards are 0.55 only. So its better to load a forex card and withdraw from ATMs. ATMs are at every corner and for 50000 jpy, charges are just 220 jpy (Rs.100/-).

  • Food is available in a huge variety of options in Japanese cuisine, and are relatively cheaper compared to india. One could have a lavish Japanese lunch or dinner would cost Rs.850 Per Person approximately if you are a non-vegetarian. But if you are a vegetarian, it can be expensive, or you may not find it easily. There are fine-dining special dinners that would cost around Rs.7000 Per Person like a robot restaurant, beef barbeque, etc.

  • Shopping: Electronic, Cooking items like grills, Clothes, Chocolates, etc. are cheaper and qualitative. Good quality big size Suitcases are available at markets at around Rs.2500, which is normally Rs.6500 to Rs.9000 in India. So its better to travel light and come back with an extra suitcase stuffed with your shopping

  • Advance booking: You definitely need to book flights and hotels in advance. Except for a peak season, and non-group travel, you may try booking across the counter for Transport (including Bullet train), Experiences, and Dining. There could be a waiting time of 20 to 30 mins for fine-dining. 

  • Must have Bullet train experience: From 5am to 11pm, there are 148 bullet trains from Osaka / Kyoto to Tokyo at every 20 mins gap. Each train has 8 coaches or more and 4 of them are open tickets and the remaining have reserved seats.

  • Transport: Road trips are cheaper if you are a bigger group. If you are solo, you may try public transport. Regular hotels offer Airport shuttle or luggage transport to the next hotel at a nominal charge like Rs.500 per bag, whichever city it is. 

  • International mobile roaming would cost Rs.800 Per Day. 

  • No tipping culture: Japan has NO culture of tipping guides / drivers. At the end of the trip, if you like, you can give Chocolates to be appreciated
