Places of Interest:

Srinagar:

  • Dal Lake:

A trip to Srinagar is incomplete without taking a Shikara ride through the scenic & serene waters of Dal lake. An overnight houseboat stay coupled with the chance to witness a beautiful sunrise over the calm waters of the lake should not be missed. You get to soak in the local culture & the vibrant landscape with this experience. The houseboats here are stationary & depict the rich wood work of the valley. Sum up your surreal Dal lake experience with local cuisine & infinite photographs.

As the hold of the freezing winter wears off, the Gardens of Srinagar come alive in vibrant shades in front of which even the colors of Holi will fall short.

  • Shalimar Bagh:

This is the largest Mughal garden in Srinagar & is said to represent the high point of Mughal horticulture. Referred to as “Crown of Srinagar”, this splendid representation of Mughal grandeur was built by Emperor Jehangir for his wife Nur jahan in 1619 on the bank of Dal lake.

A canal runs through the whole length of the garden & has natural fountains at regular intervals. Divided into three terraces, each designed intricately, this garden must have been a vision to behold during the Mughal era.

  • Nishat Bagh:

Rising from the eastern banks of Dal lake & extending into a perfect layout with the Himalayan mountains as the backdrop, this Garden of Joy/Bliss is the second largest Mughal garden in Srinagar. Built by Asif khan in 1633AD, it has 12 terrace structures for the 12 zodiac signs & well designed water pathways. The view of Dal lake from the terrace is iconic.

  • Saffron Fields:

Kashmir’s world famous Saffron comes from the town of Pampore, enroute to Pahalgam. Saffron cultivation is the livelihood of locals & this purple stretch of saffron flowers is a sight to behold.

  • Awantipura Ruins:

Built during the period of King Awantivarman in the 9th century, these are the ruins of two temples built at a distance of 1 Km for Lord Vishnu & Lord Shiva. The pillars of these temples have stood the test of time & many chapters of history.

  • Anantnag Sulpher Springs:

Deriving its name from the springs, Anantnag is blessed by nature with crystal clear waters of Sher Bagh, Andernag & Makalnag. It is said that the water from the springs is warm during winter, cold during summer & carries several mineral properties.

Pahalgam

The valleys of Pahalgam are a carpet of lush greenery & crystal clear waters during summers, a truly wonderful place to feel alive & be thankful for it. Once a humble shepherd’s village that turned into a famous destination where countless films & songs have been shot, Pahalgam is called “The Valley of Sheperds”.

It is also called “Angler’s Paradise” because Trout fishing is very popular in the Lidder river owing to its cold, clear waters. Fishing enthusiasts flock to this valley to catch Trout fishes that are always in high demand due to its nutritional content.

Pahalgam attracts pilgrims going on Amarnath yatra that starts at Chandanwadi which is 16 Km from Pahalgam. So plan your visit between October - February if you crave for a winter wonderland & March - June if you want to see the valley at its greenest & prettiest.

  • Aru Valley:

Hire a car & head out to Aru Valley through the narrow roads at the end of which lies a beautiful landscape. The place looks straight out of the movie Narnia with its thick pine trees & snow-clad mountains. You can take a pony ride to reach upper part of the valley where the view is splendid.

  • Baisaran Valley:

A pony ride to Baisaran Valley is sure to end up in your travel journal as a memorable adventure. The horses are well trained to navigate the difficult terrain of rocks, wooden logs, mud & slippery slopes. You just have to hold on tightly to your horse & enjoy the scenic path. Winding through the tall pine trees & boulders, the path opens up into a green paradise rightfully called “The mini Switzerland”. Baisaran Valley looks like a picture out of postcards with grasslands, pine trees topped with snow-clad mountains.

  • Betaab Valley:

The famous hindi movie “Betaab” was shot here, hence this Hajan Valley is now called Betaab.

The landscape with tributaries of Lidder river is mesmerizing to watch. The view of this valley from a higher vantage point will leave you speechless.

  • Chandanwari :

This is the point from where the Amarnath yatra starts & the location is a sight to behold covered in a blanket of snow during winter months. Many treks to various nearby lakes start from here too.

Sonmarg

Called the “Meadow of Gold”, Sonmarg is a contrasting landscape with beautiful meadows on the banks of Sindh river on one side & majestic mountains on the other side. With scenic locations, incredible trails & a bounty of high altitude lakes, Sonmarg will sure to leave you exhilarated. Best time to visit is March - September but avoid June - August as there is a rush for Amarnath Yatra.

  • Thajiwas Glacier:

Said to be one of the easily accessible glaciers in Kashmir, this short trek ends up with a view that leaves an impression to last a lifetime. Though it's a fairly easy trek, a pony ride can also be availed to reach this wonderful abode of nature. You feel insignificant standing in front of nature’s grandeur, with snow clad mountains rising from up close to where you stand.

  • Baltal Valley:

Located at the foot of Zoji La, this is a beautiful valley nestled in between ginormous mountains is God’s own painting canvas to say the least. There are photogenic points all along the way & you will be spoilt for choices.

  • Zero Point:

This point comes after crossing the Zoji La pass which is frequently in news for traffic mishaps & delays. The roads are rough & narrow, closed for the better part of winter due to snow. The name comes from the fact that the temperature always remains at or below zero. Despite the difficult terrain, it is a worthwhile trip to be taken in March - April.

Gulmarg

Known as the “ Meadow of Flowers”, Gulmarg is also one of the best skiing destinations in India.

  • Gondola Ride:

Being World’s second largest & highest cable car project, Gondola ride is an indispensable activity in Gulmarg. You get a panoramic view of the beautiful snow-clad mountains & the feeling of flying above a carpet of snow is unmatched. There are three levels to choose from depending on the snow coverage & the activity you want to perform.

Phase I : Gulmarg - Kongdori. During peak winter months, it’s enough to reach this place to spend some time trying out Skiing, Sledging & Snowmobile. During summer, the snow here gets dirty so many tourists prefer going to Phase II.

Phase II : Kongdori station - Kongdori Mountain. Once you are familiar with skiing you can move on to test your skills at phase II. A trip to Phase II is recommended by many because it gives a bird’s eye view of the mountain range. Definitely a once in a lifetime kind of experience.

Phase III : Kongdori - Mary Shoulder. This part is connected by chairlift and is the venue for skiing events.

  • Khilanmarg:

It’s a small village set in a valley that is covered by a meadow of colorful wildflowers during spring & changes into perfect skiing slopes during winter. With towering mountains on all sides, this place can be reached on foot or on a pony. It offers a spectacular view of Nanga Parbat(5th highest peak in the world)

  • Snow Jeep drive:

During peak winter months, taking a snow jeep drive from Tangmarg to Gulmarg is an exhilarating experience. The scene around you changes rapidly in this particular stretch & there is no better way to enjoy the adventures of life.

  • Apharwat Peak:

Raved about by ski-lovers across the world for its perfect slopes, it can be reached from Phase II of Gondola ride. Apharwat lake at the end of the trek/sledge ride is truly a vision that will remain imprinted in your memory.

  • Religious & Heritage Structures:

St. Mary Church : This Victorian architectural beauty is more than 100 years old & a testament to British Occupation.
